Speakeasy Casino, April 2007

The theme for this event was a perfect fit for the historic plantation house at Berry Hill Resort.  Tucked in the hills of Southern Virginia, the beautiful home set on acres of farmland gave a years-gone-by feel that called for a vintage party.  I designed a look for that space that was tasteful and reminiscent of the 1920s...I mean, you could practically envision an antique Studebaker rolling up the long driveway to the house.  The color scheme of white, black, and red was very simple and did well to blend with the inherent furnishings and decor.  While the event decor was in keeping with the overall theme, the 1920s really came alive when the guests arrived.  Each of the 125 guests were asked for their measurements in advance, and Costume World of Florida customized a flapper dress for each lady while a tuxedo was ordered for each gentleman.  Guests were not told the theme in advance; it was only revealed to them hours before the party when the costumes were hand-delivered to their guest rooms with a velvet bag of poker chips and a High Rollers card inviting them to the Speakeasy Club.  A jazz quartet (also in tuxedo) took the floor under the double-spiral staircase, and guests enjoyed a night at the poker, blackjack, and craps tables.  Watching the event take place, I felt like I was seeing a scene acted out from The Great Gatsby...a fantastic night for all!

The password is...  (from left) Velvet bags held clay poker chips and funny money for guests; The Berry Hill Plantation took on a 1920s feel;  Custom costumes were selected for the 125 guests in attendance; The venue's curving staircase led guests to the Speakeasy Club; Feathers and plumes were the theme of the night; The Alan Kaufmann Jazz Quartet delighted with vintage and contemporary tunes.
